Never the Bride is a comfort read for me, I have read it so many times and it is shocking I still have not read the next book in the series with our protagonist Brenda.
Set in Whitby, Brenda runs a B+B and she wants a quiet life. (I can relate with that) Her friend, Effie, lives next door and she runs a junk shop. I liked the friendship the two had. It isn’t perfect, Brenda and Effie are not perfect people, and it gets tested. I liked the episodic stories – with The Christmas Hotel, The Deadly Boutique, a TV crew, and bodies in the freezer – that do eventually link together, as well as the clues we get about Brenda’s identity. ‘Decades passed and I realised I wasn’t growing any older. At least, not at the rate that humans do.’
Never the Bride has great characters, good dialogue, and is a kooky read.
