After being disappointed by the last book in this series, I very much enjoyed reading An Act of Foul Play. As the curtain goes up inside Bristol Theatre on Act 2, a dead man is revealed on stage which gives everyone sitting in the theatre a shock! Especially as initially they assume it to be part of the play. Our protagonists Lady Hardcastle and her maid Florence Armstrong are first at the scene of the crime, as members of the audience. The dialogue is back to its sparkly best and events move quickly, including a poignant secondary story set in the local pub, The Dog and Duck. Flo and Hardcastle have their work cut out to solve both mysteries.

Foster by Claire Keegan is a short fiction novella, set in Ireland, and published by Faber & Faber, in a reissued edition. We’ve all fallen prey to browsing the books in a library and one of those books catches our eye. I saw the slim spine of Foster, and recognised the logo of the publisher. The front and back covers have quotes of praise from reviews of Foster. On the inside flap is the blurb, which intrigues but pretty much sums up the whole story. There doesn’t seem to be much depth to it. There are breadcrumbs dropped through the story that tell us why this young girl, our narrator, has been taken by her dad to stay with relatives, for an unspecified length of time. It’s a simple and sparsely told story, and not something I thought was very original. I appreciated the writing style.
