BITS – Kate Lewington

possessions now in boxes, supermarket bags and carrier bags, holdalls with busted zips

stains, stray hairs and the imprint of wooden legs

i lock in

next
finding new ways to adapt –
new way of getting places, shortcuts through rows of houses, new faces – neighbours, dog walkers and pub owner

same skyline, different angle to aspire from, building tops puncturing the blue –
spires as needles, moving in tandem on a machine –
threading a tapestry
as i fly by on my bicycle.

Poem. Sunshine Views.

Sunshine Views

the scenic view
as i walk through
layers upon layers of small happenings

of joggers
a train speeding by
the sparkle of dew on grass
crooked rubbish sacks beside the bins

an empty park
with ghosts of children past

i rejoice in the days that begin when
winter ends

when i wake
and behind the curtains
the sunshine is waiting for me

the grey, miserable days can be forgotten
replaced by hope,
possibilities that don’t look so impossible

showered, and dressed
i walk,
out into the park
where the trees wave at me
and twigs snap underneath my feet

further into wooded areas
it is like i am alone, with a different kind of magic
the hum of the road is almost inaudible

it feels i could walk forever
releasing my worries

in curiosities of nature –
discarded eggs, feathers,
and a pair of mittens
dangling on a low hanging branch from the tree

in the event the person
who lost the pair may return for them

how separate we can become

lost from what we hold dear

relying on a stranger to take notice
and help us find our lost belongings again

NOTES
The sun was out over the Bank Holiday weekend and, as it goes, suddenly everyone in the country appeared to be a lot happier. I actually wrote this poem a couple of months ago and just added a few details when I edited it a few days ago. I’m not happy with the ending of the poem, but it did leave me stumped. I imagine something will come to me eventually though.

I had mixed feelings on The Day is Ready for you, the second collection of poetry by Alison Malee. When I first read the book I struggled to connect with the poems, on the second reading I begun to appreciate the way in which Malee constructs her sentences. She writes with lowercase letters, as well as with the lines spaced, so it felt more intimate. It was that intimacy that made me start to connect with the poems, and enjoy the book. There was a feeling in the poetry of alienation, of not belonging. The questions Malee was asking based on the environment, and the experiences, of the narrator. The love poems gave me the sense the narrator believes love is for the few, and that they don’t believe they are one of those few. I liked the writing was whimsical too at some points, and I liked a lot of the metaphors that were used. I loved the title of this book too, which I interpreted as The Day is Ready for you: You are Ready for the Day.

Concept: we are becoming dull with age
I tell you about the raspberries and you tell me
We are too old to believe in magic
I ask, is it growing up that leaves us empty?

A good, decent sized, poetry collection that will give you nuggets of wonder, and goosebumps, and joy, and nostalgia.
